FEBRUARY 1967: THE DOORS RECORD "MY EYES HAVE SEEN YOU" AND DEBUT ON TV
About a month after the release of their debut album, "The
Doors" (released in January 1967), the band returned to the recording
studio to record the first song for their second album, "Strange
Days" (September 1967).
An afternoon studio session in early February 1967 produced "My
Eyes Have Seen You", a great rock tune that would later become the
second-to-last track on "Strange Days".
The group had already performed this track for some time, as it was one
of the demos recorded during their early days in September 1965, when the
lineup was still incomplete.
The direct and aggressive atmosphere of this composition provides a
remarkable musical experience, made even more engaging and exciting by
Morrison's vocals.
It is unclear whether a decision had already been made at this time in
1967 regarding the recording of a second LP. Perhaps the intention behind this
studio session was to produce an A- or B-side for a single instead.
Nevertheless, the resulting work represents a step forward from the
previous album, "The Doors", due to the complexity of its
arrangement, the variety of instruments used, and the distortion effects
employed.
"My Eyes Have Seen You" was recorded about three months before
the main sessions for "Strange Days", which significantly affected
the final version of the song. In fact, one can notice how the psychedelic
vibes that characterize almost the entire "Strange Days" LP are less
intense in "My Eyes Have Seen You".
After all, by February 1967, the band's sound was still more closely
tied to their debut album and less psychedelic.
This is also evident from the quartet's first two television
appearances, which took place in the same month. In both, the song chosen for
the short performances was "Break On Through (To The Other Side)",
the first single taken from "The Doors".
Interestingly, in the second of these two TV appearances, on 25 February
1967, the performance of this song is lip-synced.
The Doors were not yet engaged in the creative musical and instrumental
exploration that would lead to the psychedelic atmosphere of "Strange
Days" as they were busy promoting their newly released debut album.
This month also saw them play around 15 concerts between Los Angeles and
San Francisco (one every other day), unfortunately leaving no recordings of any
kind.
February 1967 was a significant month for The Doors. They were busy
recording a new song ("My Eyes Have Seen You"), making their first
two television appearances, and playing live almost every night.
The band was slowly gaining momentum, and fame was just a few months
away.
P.S.: My book "The Doors Through Strange Days"- The most comprehensive journey ever made through The Doors' second LP, is available on Amazon.com, .uk, .mx, .it, etc.

My Eyes have seen you is one of the best songs Jim ever wrote. Absolute masterpiece. Really looking forward to reading the Strange Days book soon. That album was so concise and tight. No filler, all brilliant.
