WAITING FOR "STRANGE DAYS": THE STRANGEST TELEVISION SPECIAL OF THE DOORS' CAREER
In early September 1967, the recording sessions for The Doors' second
album, "Strange Days", had just finished.
Waiting for its official release on 25 September, the band participated
in a TV show filmed in New York and called Murray the K Show and widely
regarded as the strangest performance ever by the Los Angeles quartet.
In the first segment, Jim Morrison lip-syncs "People Are
Strange" in a music video, with the other members behind him. This song
was included on the album due to be released and had also been chosen as the
first single from the LP.
So far, nothing unusual. In the second part of the show The Doors star
in a short film segment belonging to a longer release that could be described
as a spy story set in the distant future.
In the sketch, some girls are dressed as fascinating creatures from
outer space. After robbing a bank, they neutralize their opponents and escape
in a car. While driving away, they encounter The Doors standing on the side of
the road.
The car pulls over and one of the girls snatches a necklace from Jim
Morrison's neck. He had approached the car as if to seduce them. Later scenes
show The Doors trying to retrieve the pendant.
We'll leave the story open-ended here, as the short video is available (link here).
However, the questionable quality of this TV special, which was made
twenty days before the release of "Strange Days", provides one of the
band's most curious and weirdest moments.
P.S.: My book "The Doors Through Strange Days"- The most comprehensive journey ever made through The Doors' second LP, is available on Amazon.com, uk, mx, ca, .it, etc.
